DIETITIAN DR JOANNA MCMILLAN SHARES HER TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR GUT MICROBIOME TIP-TOP.

Your gut microbiome is the collection of bacteria and other microorganisms that live within your gut.  According to Dr Jo, a healthy diverse microbiome will help you to stay in tip-top shape and the best way to support it is, “to consume nutritious foods and drinks that are rich in both probiotics and prebiotics.”

 

 

Incorporating more probiotics into your diet can help to maintain a healthy gut by restoring the balance of good bacteria in your digestive tract and introducing more diversity. When choosing probiotic foods and drinks, Dr Jo suggests looking “for authentically fermented products, free from stevia, and try to find references on the pack to living cultures and a specific probiotic strain.”

Prebiotics on the other hand, are fibres that can’t digested, so they pass through the digestive system and stimulate the growth of the healthy bacteria in the gut. According to Dr Jo, you can introduce more prebiotics into your diet “with fruits and vegetables such as artichoke, garlic, onion and asparagus, bananas, apples and wholegrains like barley and oats”.
