KICKSTART YOUR DAY AND YOUR DIGESTION WITH DIETITIAN DR JOANNA MCMILLAN’S BREAKFAST BERRY BIRCHER RECIPE.
Just like we need a good breakfast, we also need to feed our probiotics (the healthy little gut bacteria) with what are called prebiotics.
“Prebiotics are types of fibre that stimulate the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut. They’re found in lots of fruits and vegetables like artichoke, garlic, onion and asparagus, bananas, apples and wholegrains like barley and oats,” Dr Joanna McMillan explains. “These fibres can’t be digested, so they pass through the digestive system and essentially become dinner [or breakfast!] for our good bacteria.”
Using our Gut Shot Berrytown to help soak the oats in this recipe is also great for your taste buds, with tangy kombucha live cultures and real raspberries, blueberries and strawberries.
Best of all, bircher or overnight oats are so simple to make and can be prepared ahead of time. Dr Jo keeps a batch of this Berry Bircher in the fridge for a couple of days, so she’s “always got on hand a perfect kickstart to my day that’s great for my gut health”.
